March 10, 2011
To the Editor:
It was with great interest that I read the February 22nd Letter to the Editor concerning the "Extra Effort Required for Some Voters" to cast their ballots in the upcoming village election. My 38-year career as an officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine has required me to more often than not apply for and vote via absentee ballot. Knowing in advance that I would be away at sea on March 15, 2011, I proceeded to Village Hall in January to pick up an absentee ballot application before shipping out. I completed the application and mailed it as per instructions.
Over a month passed before the recipient notified me that I had mailed my application to the wrong authority. I immediately notified Village Hall of this problem and was told that despite problems with the Village's absentee ballot application, my ballot would be in the mail. Two weeks have since passed, and I have yet to receive my absentee ballot at our home port of Jacksonville, FL. We set sail this afternoon and will not return to the states until after the election. My vote will not be counted.
I have to wonder how many other voters that applied for absentee ballots were similarly disenfranchised through no fault of their own. If any of the contests for Village office are decided by one vote, the Orange County Board of Elections will certainly be hearing from me. Bon Voyage!
