To the Editor:
While it is always interesting to read what out-of-state residents think about the Cornwall-on-Hudson issues, I believe it is essential to know what the residents of Cornwall-on-Hudson believe to be the pressing issues facing the village today. We have a three-member bloc on the current board who have been trying to undercut the mayor as he tries to get to the bottom of the DPW fiasco - a fiasco that cost the village residents a million dollars. Let me repeat - one million dollars from the residents of a tiny village - when it was decided to build something new on an unstable former dump site, without engineering plans, competitive bidding, and a proper CO. The former DPW building was just 20 years old and in acceptable condition. The construction of a new building was a shameful waste of time and money which could have been used for so many other pressing matters.
I would also like to point out that when Rick Gioia was on the board, the village was on the right track, paying down our debts, trimming expenses, and refusing to fall for "free money" schemes that would have left us more in debt than ever. Since then we have been mired in confusion about and obfuscation of the real issues. We are a small village - we cannot afford costly projects in light of other concerns, such as the school budget and rising prices of gasoline and other commodities.
Please consider the real issues on election day and vote for Jan Smith, Andrew Argenio, and Joe Gross, who have the best interests of the village in mind, and the knowledge and expertise to get things done right.
