Letters to the Editor: We Need Productive Change

March 09, 2011

To the Editor:

Liberty Day is celebrated annually on March 16th, the birthday of James Madison, President of the United States from 1809-1817. He was instrumental in the creation of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.

“We the People” can hope this year on March 15th for Liberty to “…establish Justice, and insure domestic Tranquility…” for our Village government.

Democracy is the foundation of our great nation, and yet, in our small Village, it has been eluding us this past year. The three-majority trustees have continued to erode our foundation and embarrass us with their outrageous behavior and stalling tactics when dealing with important business of government that we have entrusted them to perform.

As candidate for village trustee, I am dismayed at recent events involving both the village officials and the stealing of my campaign signs, for which a DPW worker was arrested and charged.

Further, I am at a loss to understand why a village employee would steal my campaign signs, get chased into the Cliffside Park area, and be arrested for this tactless crime. On his vehicle was a candidate for Mayor, Brendan Coyne sign, yet I have not heard a word from the candidate for an explanation.

Has our village become devoid of all common decency, integrity, and democracy?

I strongly encourage all village residents to watch their government in action. It is an eight-minute video that tells a tale of dysfunction and is available on YouTube – ArgenioAndrew Channel.

We need productive change in our village government. We need a more open and responsive government, a comprehensive bidding policy, a referendum policy to allow the people a voice. We need to re-instate public comment so the people can be heard. We need to put the code online to let the people know the laws that govern them. We need to put meetings online to let all village residents see their government at work and have the ability to participate, even if they can’t make the meetings.

We need to end the dysfunction and instill civility, respect, and courtesy for all. The time has come for change, and we need it now.

Andrew Argenio
Candidate for Trustee
Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson
