Letters to the Editor: Coyne Not Responsible for Sign Theft

March 09, 2011

To the Editor:

Please allow me to quote Andrew Argenio directly from a letter he submitted to the editor.

“Further, I am at a loss to understand why a village employee would steal my campaign signs, get chased into the Cliffside Park area, and be arrested for this tactless crime. On his vehicle was a candidate for Mayor, Brendan Coyne sign, yet I have not heard a word from the candidate for an explanation.”

After reading this, I would like to comment.

My guess would be the individual that stole Mr. Argenio’s campaign sign, got chased into Cliffside Park and arrested for the tactless crime does not care for him as a candidate and expressed that by using very poor judgment.

I am not sure why Mr. Argenio would expect Mr. Coyne to explain anything. I personally think that statement has gross implications! Mr. Coyne is a highly respected member of our community and to imply that he would be associated with that type of behavior is insulting, inflammatory and unnecessary. I do not feel that the act dignifies a comment from Mr. Coyne.

Yesterday, March 8th at 3:54 pm a friend of mine on Idlewild Avenue watched several young people walk onto the property of a residence she was in and steal a Coyne sign from the porch. Never for one second did she or I, after hearing the story, assume that Mr. Argenio had any association with the act or owed any type of explanation for it. That would be unfair and ridiculous!

As a tax payer and member of this community, I for one do not feel that the poor judgment and illegal action of one individual, who happened to be an employee of the Village, in any way, shape or form reflects or represents the actions and/ or opinions of any other Village employee.

I have often said that if it were possible to have a favorite tax bill, mine would be my Village tax bill. I see everyday what my tax dollars do for me. My Village taxes have a tangible, direct effect on my daily life. I consider the services provided to me by the Village employees, both past and present, to be outstanding. I am grateful to them for all they do to make my quality of life in the Village what it is.
