General News: Man Charged with Stealing Campaign Signs
March 05, 2011
A Cornwall man faces charges that he stole campaign signs in the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Friday night, tossing them in the back of his pick-up truck.
Police say that resident Daniel Degroat spotted a man, later identified as James Horne, 32, an employee of the department of public works, walk onto his front lawn and remove a campaign sign for trustee candidate Andrew Argenio. Degroat called police then got into his car and followed the pickup truck as the driver went to Cliffside Park and onto Bayview Avenue.
Officer John Pena then stopped the truck. Police say they found seven signs supporting Argenio in the flatbed of the truck. Another sign, this one in favor of mayoral candidate Brendan Coyne, had been stuck in full view on the tailgate of the truck, police say.
Earlier this week, a banner in support of Argenio that was hanging from the front porch of a residence on Hudson Street also disappeared in the middle of the night. No one has been charged in that incident.
Police have charged Horne with petit larceny and possession of stolen property. Chief Paul Weber says his department is researching election law to see if other charges could be filed.
Andrew Argenio said he is disappointed to see his signs stolens and wonders why a Coyne supporter would go after his signs. He suggested that a simple statement from Coyne could put an end to this type of action and added that he has tried to contact Coyne several times today but has not gotten a response.
Reached by phone, Coyne said he didn’t know who took the signs. " I don’t condone anyone taking signs. Period, Amen. It is unfortunate," he said.
