Letters to the Editor: Theft of Candidate's Sign Damages Integrity
March 01, 2011
To the Editor:
For more than three years we have regularly attended both working and regular sessions of the Village Board. We witnessed the degradation of the Board's ability to function when the current majority, trustees Edsall, Vatter and Kane, took control. The personal insults and lack of civility have been shamefully evident in the meetings this past year. We are embarrassed to have these men making decisions for us.
This behavior has damaged not only the reputation of the Village, but wounded the commitment to the freedom of expression which is one of the basis of our democratic process.
Last night saw yet another example of the attack upon our freedom. We had put a banner supporting Andrew Argenio's candidacy roped to the railing of the front porch of our house on Hudson Street. Last night, someone came up on our porch and stole the sign. We reported it to the police and the banner has been replaced.
We are, of course, upset at the criminal trespass. But this is not just personal. This kind of politically based theft and vandalism damages the integrity of the candidates opposing Argenio, as well as the political process as a whole.
Let us be better than that in Cornwall-on-Hudson.
David House and Emily Thomas
