Letters to the Editor: Continuity is Crucial Now

March 01, 2011

To the Editor:

As we prepare to vote in our Village Election on March 15, 2011, I would ask that residents take a moment to reflect on what has happened over the last four years.

In 2007, we were all asking for someone to run against the incumbent mayor of 26 years. The person who stepped up with determination was Joseph Gross. He was an underdog but forged ahead. It was a hard fought battle, nasty at times, but the facts were clear: Our Village had a debt of $8.6 million and a DPW built by a Local Development Corporation which we had plenty of questions about. We felt left out of decisions but we were given the bill.

Joseph Gross is that same person today who is being criticized for doing what you asked him to do. Ask questions, get answers, keep the residents informed and reduce the debt. He hired a highly respected law firm and he told you why. Then Trustees Edsall, Vatter and Kane fired them in April 2010. He evacuated the DPW building and he told you why. He didn’t shy away from doing the right thing for our employees and the community. Remember the Dept. of State report of May 17, 2010 said: “The DOS would strongly recommend against the occupancy of the building at this time. There is no assurance that the building structure is capable of safely sustaining gravity or lateral loading conditions to which it may be subject. That the building remains standing at this time should not be taken as an indication that a structural failure would not occur without minimal warning. Photographs printed in the Tectonic report show significant deterioration of structural members.” He will not compromise on the liability of this Village because he takes the business of this Village seriously. He does not want you to pay for the repairs to the DPW building like you paid for the Black Rock plant because of no litigation with contractors.

So, is it time to elect a mayor who shows up to a few meetings, says little but wants the job? Check your escalating school taxes for the last 10 years? Did Mr. Coyne ever take a stand on one thing while he served on the school board? Where is he on the legal bills, DPW, the debt? His silence was deafening then and it’s deafening now.

With this considered, I support the return of Mayor Gross to office, with Jan Smith and Andrew Argenio, to hire a new law firm with a fixed retainer, continue reducing the debt, litigate and repair the DPW building and address the other outstanding issues. He knows what we are facing and you will see many issues resolved immediately in a cooperative spirit. You will have a Mayor who will make the tough decisions, ask questions, and keep you informed. Continuity is crucial now!

Barbara Gosda
Deputy Mayor
