Letters to the Editor: Resident Questions Fighting Assessment Ruling
February 24, 2011
To the Editor:
I guess the ruling by the New York State Supreme Court judges on the law suit from Leone Properties (see article) was not a ruling that the Cornwall tax assessor agreed with. The town went with an appeal, using taxpayer money, when the ruling also said that he was not doing his job properly. The appeal was a no-brainer as the second ruling confirmed what the earlier court decision.
I am a taxpayer and my assessment was raised. I did not agree that a $4,000 replacement of a front porch roof, was worth a $ 43,000 raise in my assessment and my property did not raise in value. Also my property part of the assessment was given a value of $32,800 dollars for a lot of 100 feet by 150 feet on Mailler Avenue. Lots in Cornwall are not selling for that price.
This is not the end, as the town must refund the money paid for the higher assessment back to the property owner for the years when the higher assessment was on the books, along with paying the lawyer for his work and the interest that is owed for the time the town had the money and guess what, the taxpayer is paying the bill, Now, isn't that a great thing to look forward to in January, 2012?
