To The Editor:
First, let me clarify that I am well aware of where I live, that being in the town. So, I am merely expressing an opinion regarding the upcoming election in the Village, specifically for the position of mayor. Having lived in the Village for 15 some years in the past, my husband having been raised there from age nine, and he having served on the Village Board, the Village still is very much in my heart.
My question for the Village residents is – do you want a mayor who talks the talk, or one who truly walks the walk?
Brendan Coyne is one of the most community-minded people I know. Whether you agreed with him or not, he dedicated a number of years of volunteer service to our school district. He continues to actively volunteer within his church in a variety of roles. Brendan Coyne is a leader in this community who has helped raise three well-grounded children, in the Village, who are now adults. When looking at mayoral choices, would you, as a village resident, prefer a mayor who seems to dress as a pirate and march in the Fourth of July Parade, or, would you prefer a mayor who so believes in this community that he has been an integral part of the Fourth of July Committee, and has given, and continues to give, countless hours to an event that has become a symbol of Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson?
While all of the Village events of late are concerning, I would urge Village residents to pause and think about the true root cause of what has turned into what I call a soap opera gone bad. Is the discord all caused by the trustees, or is it more a cause of a mayor who, when he can no longer get his way, in essence stamps his feet, does what he wants to do, and disregards majority voting. A town official was recently quoted in the local paper saying that when progress isn’t made on the building inspector issue, it looks like the mayor doesn’t care about the residents of the Village. Very sad indeed.
If the Village truly wants a mayor who will “walk the walk,” one who knows from his heart how to give to this community, who has shown his community dedication and spirit in his deeds, in how he lives and how he continues to give to the community, the answer to me is all too clear.
Walking the walk would win with me. Enough of anyone who just talks the talk.
