February 20, 2011
To the Editor,
I would like to start by saying that I hope as a community we can all be interested in finding out the truth, not what is “right.”
I would like to refer Trustees Edsall, Vatter and Kane to Mr. Bailey’s February 15th letter to the editor that states “Let’s not forget that they hired the current lawyer against the wishes of the mayor. They apparently did not work out a fee structure that would avoid overages of tens of thousands of dollars.”
I second his request for answers to his three questions.
I would also like to refer both Mayor Gross and Candidate Coyne to Mr. Wilkinson’s February 16th letter, proposing the concept of a “proper challenge-and-response debate setting”. I feel that one or two letters to the Local from either candidate is not enough, given the current political issues in the Village. We need an idea of where each candidate stands regarding hard, concrete financial numbers to compare their thoughts on how they see running this Village.
That said, I would like to repeat my support of Mayor Gross. I believe from what I have read on this website, as well as a lot of time spent picking through Andrew Argenio’s videos, that he is dealing as properly with the issue as possible. I would also like to say that I support keeping our full-time officers; their livelihood is worthwhile to me also. However, I think that we need to accept, and decide as a community, that it will mean the possibility of additional taxes, and that the current financial crisis now includes the cost of the overages of the legal fees.
I would like to end by posing some questions to Mr. Coyne. I do not question his desire to better the Village, or foster a positive climate. I truly believe that is what he wants. However, I have read a quote in the February 18, 2011 General News article that states “Brendan Coyne, who is challenging Gross for the mayor’s seat, says that he supports retaining the two full-time officers. “I look forward to negotiating with the police union after the election," Coyne said.”
What are your thoughts, based on the current financial numbers, of how things are getting paid for? I would also like to ask - will you retain your affiliations with the school district, in any manner, if you are elected Mayor?
If so, I read in the February 10, 2011 General News Article regarding the SBAC that “Rehm stated that the proposed expansion of school facilities that was first introduced in November would not be a part of the new budget.”, also that “Committee member Brendan Coyne seemed confident in the task the committee has ahead of it. ‘Since this committee has come about the district hasn’t lost a budget,’ said Coyne. ‘The district doesn’t use scare tactics, and this committee allows for real transparency of the process.’”
Will the facilities be brought up later in the year, after the school budget has been voted upon? My reason for asking is this – if we are going to have to decide how to afford the cost of the full time officers, as well as the legal overages, would we have your support in assisting Village residents in juggling the costs of
