Letters to the Editor: Questions for Candidate Coyne

February 17, 2011

Dear Editor,

It’s been eight weeks since Brendan Coyne has announced his candidacy for Village mayor and he has yet to tell the voters where he stands on any of the serious issues facing the Village. So far we understand that he wants to encourage more civil cooperation among the trustees but with less than a month until the election, Mr. Coyne needs to tell us more than what a nice time he had collecting signatures.

So I am publicly asking Mr. Coyne to come forward and tell us how he plans to address the following:

How does he plan to resolve the DPW building crisis? Beyond that, will he promise to get to the bottom of how a million dollar, publicly-bonded, municipal facility was built with numerous code violations and occupied without signed architectural plans or a CO? And what are his solutions for the ongoing attorney controversy and how will he address the issue of legal costs to the Village going forward?

It would also be very helpful to learn whether Mr. Coyne believes that the Mayor should continue to appoint the Village Attorney or is he ok with a move that could forever weaken the office of mayor by letting the trustees select the mayor’s legal counsel and control his access to legal advice? What is his position on the Village police department? Is he committed to a full-time force, a part-time force or like a recent state study recommends; letting the town police force patrol the Village?

So far, Mr. Coyne has chosen to be silent on these and many other relevant issues and it’s getting to the point where we have to wonder why. We know where Mayor Gross stands on all of the critical issues and we deserve no less than knowing where his challenger stands. So if Mr. Coyne wants us to believe that he is equal to the task of being the Chief Executive Officer of our Village Government during these difficult times, he will have to show that he has far more to offer us than being a very nice man who hopes we will elect him simply because he is not the incumbent.
