To the Editor:
My name is Jan (Brach) Smith and I’m running for the position of trustee on the village board. I have lived in the village for more than 40 years. I was raised on Cherry Avenue and attended Cornwall schools. My husband and I bought our home in the village in 1984 and have raised our two children here.
I was employed by the United States Military Academy at West Point for 35 years. During my tenure there, I was an accountant and auditor. As an auditor, I identified fraud, waste and abuse. I reviewed activities and identified ways to increase efficiencies. Integrity and accountability were an integral part of my daily business and have always been an important part of my personal life.
I have reviewed the village’s financial reports and results of audits. We have lived with poor internal controls and inadequate financial analysis for many years. This has resulted in a large debt that current residents are now paying. Legal expenses are out of control. Controls must be in place to have any business run smoothly and our village is no different. I will work to put those controls in place and hold down expenses.
I believe a budget not only addresses current finances but anticipates future requirements and incorporates this information into a comprehensive financial program. This is my strength and I will use my expertise to assist the village in developing a comprehensive plan that can take us into the future. We need to be proactive, NOT REACTIVE. We need to know that our tax dollars are being spent well for those things the village truly needs.
I believe that all residents have a right to be heard during meetings. During the board meeting on April 5, 2010, your right to comment at working sessions was eliminated and comment sessions during the regular board meeting were reduced to just one after new business, so you may have to wait an entire month before you can comment. I want to hear what you have to say and I will work to reinstate these comment sessions.
I want to thank everyone who signed my petitions and, if elected, I promise to give you my very best. I will represent YOU and ensure that YOUR concerns are heard. I ask for your support on March 15, 2011 and hope the vote will give you a Village Board you can be proud of.
Jan Smith
