As she raced to the finish line in the USA Junior Girls National Cross Country Championship on Saturday, front runner Aisling Cuffe once again left her competitors in the dust, winning the competition against college-age runners by a margin of 26-seconds. With her victory in the 6K race in San Diego, Cuffe is guaranteed a spot in the US team that will compete in the World Junior Girls Cross Country Championship in Spain in March.
Much as she did two months ago at the Foot Locker National Championships, Cornwall High School senior Aisling Cuffe steamrolled past her opposition to decisively win the junior women's championship.
Cuffe opened up a substantial gap on the field early, and was never challenged for the victory, crossing the finish line in 21:13, a 26-second gap over runner up Molly Grabill of Poway, California.
After the race, Cuffe talked about her victory and the future competition in Spain. “I'm so excited to go to Spain!,” she told race organizers. “During the race, some of the people on the course started yelling the distance I was ahead, and so I told myself to relax and be confident that you've got the race.”
On Tuesday, Cuffe was surprised at her Cornwall-on-Hudson home when she was named 2010-11 Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year and presented a trophy by Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix. (see story)
