Letters to the Editor: Thanks to People Who Make Cornwall Special

January 30, 2011

To the Editor:

My family and I are compelled to take a few moments to say THANK YOU to many of the wonderful people who have shown us why our Cornwall community is such a special place.

In late January 2010 we experienced a fire in our home; it was because of this dark and rainy day that we have seen the radiant beauty that is so prevalent throughout our wonderful community. While we lost our home and most of our worldly possessions, we gained so much more; we took the opportunity to step back and see that family, friends and community are so much more important and valuable than the artifacts we collected on shelves. We have looked deeply into the soul of many of the people in our community and have seen the most wonderful examples of humanity and compassion. Thank you to everyone who has helped to reshape a tragic event into a wonderful epic journey in our lives.

The first responders provided our initial glimpse. Area volunteer firefighters led by the Salisbury Mills Fire Department and Cornwall Police responded quickly and professionally and they contained and extinguished the fire expertly. A wonderful neighbor and friend of ours, a retired NYFD captain, was on site during the blazing fire and beyond. He said that he’d never seen such a professional job done by volunteer services. It was impressive, even to a lifelong professional. You are truly role models throughout the community and gratitude is forever burned into our hearts.

Co-workers and friends at the Cornwall Central School District were superb in the outpouring of assistance. Many people provided meals, coats, clothes and necessities to get us through the first couple of weeks. The help from the administration and teachers through our initial scheduling chaos helped so much to limit the tension and pressure. You’ve each taught us the true meaning of community through actions.

The team at the town of Cornwall government offices provided excellent service and useful advice throughout our experience. We rarely knew what needed to be done or how to request it, but they were patient, caring and supportive with every question or issue. Thanks for forming our sense of community and for incorporating us into the loving family of our wonderful town.

Burns and Whalen Construction have done a superb job of replacing the rubble with a beautiful new home in less time than anyone estimated. They have assembled a great team of dedicated professionals and have been responsive to our many questions, thoughts, and ideas. Their worksite has been one of the cleanest and most professional I’ve seen in over 30 years on construction areas. We thank you and the entire team and are thankful to have had the time to get to know you all. Thank you for building trust and appreciation through your professionalism.

The Bethlehem Presbyterian Church has provided more than just a location to be prayerful and to worship, you have provided friendship and family. The initial support of all those wonderful people volunteering hours to lay out our pictures to dry and the view of the church hall filled with those pictures provides an image we’ll always cherish. The many wonderful meals, calls of support, first place to stay and all the other blessings have forever changed our hearts and have helped us realize there is always something more.

To our friends, thank you for the patience, love and support you provided. You have somehow known and sensed the physical needs and emotional support to help us pull through and you continue to be our rock and strength. To our closest friends, who we consider family, thanks enough can never be said.
But from the heart, to all we say: “THANK YOU!”

Scot, Valerie, Brittany, and David Ransbottom
