To the Editor:
I recently addressed the legal bills for the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson with the residents through this media. I would like to continue that dialogue.
We have now received the November invoice from Tarshis, Catania, Liberth, Mahon and Milligram PLLC for $13,804.38 for a total of $90,184.89. You are paying for this. Interesting enough in these bills, we have charges for legal counsel for the ethics board amounting to $12,199.45. In spite of these expenditures the ethics board continues to be non-functioning as it is bogged down in legal issues. This board has had no clear legal guidance from this law firm. We also have charges in the amount of $1,672.25 for a revised dog ordinance which was immediately challenged by the American Kennel Club as being unenforceable in New York State. Who did that research and why are we paying for it?
As Mr. Vatter and Mr. Edsall are out collecting signatures for their petitions for re-election, perhaps they can answer your questions regarding these charges which your village taxes will pay based on Trustees Edsall, Vatter and Kane hiring the attorneys. These three trustees remain totally loyal to this firm in spite of the outrageous bills and the quality of service. Why aren’t they concerned about your tax dollars? I say again, why?
Finally, as to the matter of our upcoming election, I personally ask that you come out and vote. This is a crucial election in our village history and we have many complex issues to resolve. Election Day is March 15 from noon to 9 PM. If you need an absentee ballot application, please call me at 845 534-9367 or if you aren’t registered, please do so on Saturday, March 5 from noon until 5 PM at Village Hall. Mark these important dates on your calendar and remember you may sign one petition for mayor and two for trustee. For those of us who care deeply about our quality of life, fiscal responsibility and transparency in government, now is the time to speak up. I have spoken with many of you about our village being smeared in the newspaper and I know this is not what you want. Please let your voice be heard loud and clear on March 15. The time is critical and it is up to you……..be heard!
Barbara Gosda
Deputy Mayor
Cornwall-on-Hudson
Comments:
I gave people the break down of that meeting under the article about the decision to pay the legal fees ...
I am vociferous ... but please think about what is being done ...

Typical Barbara. I was at that meeting, and she pushed very hard for the language she now objects to even when the exact problem was raised. Hypocrite.

If a contractor builds me a porch and it falls down, I don't pay for it. If a technician fixes my transmission and it fails on the way out of the shop, I stop the check. If a lawyer tells me a revised dog ordinance is legal and it turns out not to be, I ask for my money back and go to Judge Judy if I don't get it...
That $1,672 seems like an easy line item to cross off.
