General News: Village Board Undecided on Building Inspector
January 19, 2011
Mayor Joseph Gross wants to hire a part-time building inspector for the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson to replace Bruce Yancewicz, who resigned from that position in December.
He introduced the name of a part-time inspector in the village of Wappinger’s Falls, but neither he nor Deputy Mayor Barbara Gosda could convince the other three trustees to take action.
Trustee Mark Edsall said that he thinks it is cost-effective to explore a longer-term cooperation with the town’s building department. The town board voted ten days ago to provide building inspection services to the village on an hourly basis for at least 90 days but no discussions have yet been held to finalize the offer.
Deputy mayor Gosda expressed her concern that the town could only offer limited services and said she’d like the village to have its own inspector. “Why reach out to the town when we can do something ourselves?” she asked her fellow trustees.
Trustee Edsall reminded the board that the residency requirement that Yancewicz cited as the reason for leaving his post last month still needed to be resolved if an out-of-town building inspector was hired, even on a temporary basis.
Village business owner Tony Missere also spoke during the public comment section about the building inspector, threatening legal action to force the appointment of a new inspector.
