Letters to the Editor: Sands-Ring Roof Fund

The cedar shingles on the roof of Sands Ring homestead need to be replaced.
The cedar shingles on the roof of Sands Ring homestead need to be replaced.
December 13, 2010

To the Editor:

Over the last year the Board of Trustees has concentrated its fundraising efforts on securing a new roof for the Homestead. The need is critical. Our 50 year old cedar shake roof won't last much longer. Both exterior and interior damage is visible and growing worse. The shingles are cracking and curling. The dormers are leaking. Inside the plaster is flaking from moisture.

We are pleased to announce that we have nearly $12,000 in our New Roof Fund. Due to the generosity of the Ralph E. Ogden Foundation, we have been able to match their challenge grant of $5,000.

Unfortunately, this is not enough to cover the expense of our new roof. We will continue towards raising the needed funds.

Our Annual Fund campaign begins this month. Please be generous. Every contribution will help us attain our goal.

In addition, all proceeds from our Sands Ring Recipe Books benefit our New Roof Fund. The suggested donation is $15 for those books obtained locally and $20 for mailed books.

The recipe books are available through our website, by mail, and al our local retail supporters. In Cornwall these include Candles Creative Gifts, and More; Jones Farms, and the Cornwall Yarn Shop. Books can also be obtained in Cornwall-on-Hudson at the Hudson Valley Gallery.

Sands Ring Homestead has stood for 250 years though the past efforts and support of the Sands Ring Families, businesses and government leaders, and members of the community. It's our turn now. As stewards of this historical treasure, it's our responsibility to keep history alive. So even if it is one shingle at a time, let's put a new roof on the homestead. What a wonderful 250th birthday present to the Homestead that would be!

To contribute to our New Roof Fund, you can send a check to Friends of Sands Ring Homestead Museum, P.O. Box 226, Cornwall, N.Y., 12518. Or if you prefer to contribute online, you can visit our website at www.sandsring.org.

Comments:

Tried to donate, but the sandsring.org site seems to be demanding that I use Paypal, since I can't get past it to use Amex.

I want nothing to do with Paypal.

Fix that and I'll donate.
