December 11, 2010
Cross country runner Aisling Cuffe won the Footlocker Cross Country National Championship on Saturday, dominating a race in which she crossed the finish line 34 seconds before her closest competition. Her final time for the 5K course at San Diego’s Balboa Park was 16:53.
A senior at Cornwall Central High School who plans to attend Stanford University in September, Cuffe told the San Diego Mercury News that she was determined to take control of the race early after finishing fourth last year when she failed to stay with the leaders. Over the first loop of the race she slowly pulled to the front, then began to distance herself from her competitors at the 3,000-meter mark
"It was a big gamble because making a big move tires you out," Cuffe told the Mercury News. "I kind of had a back up plan but I told myself this has to work because there is no Plan C. I told myself 'you have to make this work or you will lose.' I put all my energy into the one move."
