General News: NYMA President to Speak at Town Meeting
December 06, 2010
The president of the board of trustees at New York Military Academy will make a presentation to the Cornwall town council at its work session on Monday, December 6, at 7pm at town hall.
David Fields is expected to update the council on NYMA’s plans to develop some of its property into new homes. While no specific agenda is available, it is likely that Fields will clarify the school’s response to the town’s interest in purchasing the athletic fields at the school. Last week, Fields said that some alumni oppose the sale to the town, which was not part of the original rescue plan last July that allowed NYMA to stay open and pay off some large debts.
In August, the town council decided to look into making an offer to purchase a portion of the property and a month later passed a moratorium on building permits in town. Fields said that NYMA will seek an exemption from the moratorium.
Town supervisor Kevin Quigley said on Monday that he is not sure what will be in Fields’ presentation but he welcomed the opportunity for a discussion.
