Thai food and Thai culture landed in Cornwall-on-Hudson this morning as seven Buddhist monks and people from the Hudson Valley Thai community came to bless the opening of Sawatdee restaurant, which starts serving Thai food and sushi today.
Seven monks dressed in gold robes entered late to the ceremony but quietly took their places in a row beneath an ornately carved rosewood plaque that covered the wall behind them. More than 30 guests, relatives and friends of Emanuel Guaranuccio and his wife, Lek, crowded into the room, praying in Thai as the monks chanted.
The monks, who live in a monastery on Long Island, recited chants intended to bring blessing on the business and the building that houses the Sawatdee at 181 Hudson Street. When finished, members of the community showed their respect and brought food to the monks, where they sat with large bowls they had brought with them.
Once the monks had been served, other guests started to enjoy the Thai food that featured chicken, Thai rolls, spicy soup, and rice served in shiny metal bowls with traditional designs hammered into them. Two watermelons had been carved with elaborate flower patterns, adding to the traditional charm of original Thai art on the walls and tables.
A Thai dancer from Highland dressed in the traditional skirt and headdress of her country as she waited to perform for the visitors.
At the end, Guaranuccio said that the ceremony was held to give thanks and to welcome the public to his restaurant.
