Letters to the Editor: Armitage Softball Thanks

October 19, 2010

To the Editor,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for its continued support of the 12th Annual Bruce Armitage Memorial Softball Tournament held at Black Rock on October 2nd & 3rd of this year. The response that we receive each year from community organizations and our residents is tremendous. There are way too many supporters to list in this limited space. But rest assured the Armitage family, Storm King Fire Engine Company #2, and I truly appreciate all the support that we have received over the years.

What began twelve years ago as an event to remember Bruce and raise much needed funds for the educational future of his children has become much more. We are now able to touch the lives of children beyond those of Bruce’s.

Three years ago we established the Bruce Armitage Athletic Scholarship award given each year to a CCHS graduating male and female student. We have now awarded six of these scholarships. In 2009 a portion of the proceeds from the softball tournament was given to a medical fund established for a young girl, with ties to the Cornwall community, who had been diagnosed with leukemia and again this year, the Storm King Fire Engine Company #2, will donate a portion of the tournament proceeds to the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at the Westchester Medical Center. This donation is being made in honor of another one of our community’s children who has been receiving treatment by the physicians at the hospital.

In closing, as you can see, Bruce’s memory lives on and he continues to touch the lives of so many within our community just as he did when he was alive. For this we thank each and every one of you that has supported this wonderful event over the past twelve years.

Sincerely,
Mike Trainor
Storm King Fire Engine Company #2
Tournament Organizer

Comments:

Bruce was a great Husband and Dad and a great friend growing up. I can't pick up a basketball or baseball glove without thinking of Bruce and the days of our youth in Cornwall on Hudson, Homeland Avenue and Avenue A. Good for Storm King Engine Company and Mike Trainor for keeping Bruce's memory alive in such a fitting way. I am sure he would be very pleased.
