►The town of Cornwall police department has won accreditation from New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services for the second time, making it only one of only eight in Orange County to pass the rigorous review of its efficiency and training.
Police chief Todd Hazard shared the accreditation plaque with members of the town council on Tuesday night. “Achieving accreditation is quite an accomplishment,“ Hazard commented later, “but maintaining accreditation is a bigger accomplishment as you need to demonstrate compliance with the 132 program standards for the previous five years. “
Councilman Al Mazzocca, who is the liaison with the police department, described the review process. “They interview every single patrolman and speak to people in town hall,” Mazzocca told those present at the council meeting. “We passed with flying colors and I am very proud of the chief and his people.”
►Police officer Stephen Bedetti won some praise from his chief, Todd Hazard, for cracking a series of burglaries in the Beaver Dam Lake area.
In a letter recognizing Bedetti’s investigative skills, Chief Hazard said that after the officer had been assigned to investigate a burglary of jewelry from a residence in mid-September, he developed a suspect and brought him into headquarters for questioning.
Bedetti’s investigation led to the arrest of the suspect, 26-year-old Robert Vassas of Washingtonville for a total of three burglaries that had occurred in the Beaver Dam Lake area during the summer. He also arrested a 20-year-old female from New Windsor, Juliet Stafford, who was found in possession of some of the jewelry that was stolen. She was charged with possession of stolen property.
