Children started lined up for the first day of school across Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson this morning, the youngest ones eager and anxious for the experience, the older ones looking forward to seeing their friends again. According to the school district, 3, 471 students were enrolled in all five schools by today.
At Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School, a new principal, the first in 21 years, welcomed the children as they lined up according to grade on the sidewalk outside. Gail Wehmann did not use the bullhorn that her predecessor employed to speak to the students and their parents but at 8:45 am she announced that “the bell has rung,” and led the first graders to the entrance.
The first graders, many of whom had gone through all-day kindergarten at the school last year, already knew what was expected of them. Leading the fourth grade line, twins Max and Jake Timmerman, dressed stylishly in hats and matching t-shirts, showed the self-confidence of kids who are now the oldest ones in the school.
The last to pass inside were the kindergarteners, who lined up along the fence while anxious parents bent over to snap pictures or to give them one last kiss goodbye.
