General News: NYMA Cadets Return for New School Year

On Sunday, the New York Military Academy opened its doors to 32 returning cadets who are taking part in the Leadership Development School prior to the official start of classes in two weeks.
First thing Monday morning, the cadets who are hoping to become leaders in the year ahead were put through drill instructions by Staff Sergeant Fletcher Bailey, who started with a review of how to stand at attention, with feet and hands properly held. Earlier they had assembled with a live trumpet call played by cadet Mackey, from New Windsor.
"We're After Greatness"
Lt. Colonel David Boudreau, the senior army instructor at NYMA, said that the cadets will be re-introduced to all aspects of military life because some of the cadets had developed bad habits that needed to be corrected. “We’re after greatness,” Boudreau said, referring to the level of achievement that he and other school administrators are seeking at the school that was rescued from the brink of closure in July. “Forty-five days ago NYMA was on the operating table,” Boudreau commented as he smiled at the prospect of new cadets walking in the door.
Major Jeffrey Coverdale, the school’s interum superintendent, said that they are still accepting cadets and would like to have 65 to 70 enrolled by the time classes start on September 13th. He noted that they are talking with families who are concerned that teacher layoffs and growing class sizes will have a negative impact on their child’s education.
Higher Level of Academics Await Cadets
“I’m ecstatic about the curriculum we’re offering,” Coverdale said, “We’re offering a high level of academics that had been missing and I told these cadets that they could be n for a rude awakening this year.”
The male cadets will live in the Jones Barrack, a large building on the central square of the campus that has been used for five years. In recent weeks, the rooms were painted and renovated, getting ready for the retuning cadets.
On Tuesday, September 7, the new cadets will arrive at NYMA, where the cadets chosen as company leaders will begin to train them prior to start of classes.
