General News: Clinical Trials at SLCH Cancer Center
August 23, 2010
From St. Lukes Cornwall Hospital
St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) has been approved by the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) to participate in Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials slated to begin at the end of August.
“Clinical trials offer an avenue of treatment not previously available for our patients who have not responded to the conventional methods,” said Cleveland Lewis, MD, Medical Director, Littmann Cancer Center. “This is another step in providing comprehensive quality cancer care close to home.”
The clinical trials will be offered through the Infusion Suite at SLCH’s Littman Cancer Center. The Suite is a cornerstone of the cancer program which consists of a warm, welcoming treatment space that incorporates flexible clinical areas with ten infusion chairs, one treatment bed and individual televisions. The Littman Cancer Center provides our region with consolidated, comprehensive cancer care close to home. An affiliate of Mount Sinai Hospital, the Center offers access to the experts, technology and treatments patients need to fight the battle against cancer.
Founded in 1956, the CALGB is a national clinical research group sponsored by the National Cancer Institue. With a network of 26 university medical centers, over 200 community hospitals and more than 3000 oncology specialists, the CALGB collaborates in clinical research studies to develop better treatments for cancer. Clincial trials help to not only develop treatment for cancer but new strategies for early detection and prevention.
Phase 2 clinical trials are administered to a small group of patients to test the experimental drug or treatment for effectiveness and safety. Phase 3 clinical trials recruit larger groups of patients to confirm Phase 2 trials, monitor side effects and compare results to other commonly used drugs or treatment.
