To The Editor:
Last week I requested that the Ethics Board investigate Trustee Barbara Gosda relative to a conflict of interest stemming from her husband’s membership in the Fire Company and Fire Department. This brought a howl of complaints from the usual suspects as well as some of the late Mr. Gosda’s relatives and in-laws. Mrs. Gosda knows how I felt about Bob and what I did during and after his illness, and I will make no further comment thereon.
For background, I have concerns about the composition of the Ethics Board, and given the Mayor’s stated desire to have sole choice of the replacement Ethics Board member, I thought it necessary to draw attention to some inconsistencies. It is unfortunate that this comes on the heels of Bob Gosda’s passing. I would have made the same request were he still us with had the same circumstances arisen.
Here is the full text of my request: “Since the ethics board has not dismissed the complaint against me relative to my membership in the Fire Company, please notify them that Barbara Gosda's husband was a member of the Fire Company for 50 years, and as such they need to investigate Mrs.Gosda as well.” Interestingly, while I have not heard a word from the Ethics Board regarding the charges against me, I already received a rejection of my request from the Ethics Board. While it is premature to draw conclusions, it is not a good sign.
The complaint against me is without merit, and so is my request relative to Mrs. Gosda. It is, however, interesting to see the mayor’s cronies cry for my scalp while Trustee Gosda (who is on the board’s Fire Committee, overseeing the Fire Department) is made out to be a victim. Note again that I do not think Mrs. Gosda did anything wrong.
Finally, for the record, I do not have a position of authority or responsibility with regard to Fire Department operations or finances. Due to some arcane features of the NY State Village Law, Storm King Engine Company and the Cornwall on Hudson Fire Department are not the same thing. My role as president of the fire company is that of head of a volunteer civic organization that donates the biggest chunk of its fundraising to the Village. The members of Storm King Engine donated over $350,000 of equipment to the Village in recent years. I am proud to be part of that.
Trustee Douglas Vatter

Suspects,Cronies? while you attack a greiving widow! Perhaps you're complaint was regected because you attempted to manipulate and undremine the operation of the board of ethics.Mabe it is due to the poor writing of the complaint. You have had youre oppertunity to make an apperance and you made youre case in a letter to the board of ethics. In this letter you attacked me claiming I broke the law regarding disclosure forms. It was obvios to me you havent even read the law that you expect others to comply with. You made youre ethics charges to take attention off of you and keep the ethics board in limbo so they cant make a ruling without a 3rd member and hiding behind the good works of other people in the fire Co. is just as wrong

Maybe (or mabe?) it is due to poor writing I find it difficult following your (or youre?) argument. You might not want to mention poor writing trying to persuade

Please Henk its a website not a Village document. Read what I wrote and get the message. All of the ethics charges that I have filed have warrented an investigation and none of them have been proven to be baseless.Yes I am a poor speller and Dyslecsic but it will not invalidate my ideas with 2 petty spelling errors.Read his letter he claims to want a ruling from the Ethics board but he knows there has been a resignation. Yup im a poor speller but I was able to persuade the patent office twice to give me a patent and I defended one in court my self and won. I guess they dident check spelling like a nun with a ruler.

Am I reading this right?
Did Mr. Vatter basically admit in writing that the ethics charges he has brought against Ms. Gosda are A)to simply make a issue about the who sits on the ethics committee, and B) that the charges are, in fact, baseless?
Regardless of whether the ethics violation Mr. Vatter faces are legitimate or not (I don't claim to know), it seems odd that someone would publicly admit they were essentially abusing the workings of a legitimate Village government committee in order to make a point or retaliate for something.
Isn't THAT an ethics violation in and of itself?
Maybe these things are less formal than I'm thinking they are. I don't know.

OK, so I'm re-reading this and seeing that Mr. Vatter has submitted a request for an investigation to the ethics committee, so that is clearly less formal than someone officially being charged with an ethics violation, but still...he says verbatim: "The complaint against me is without merit, and so is my request relative to Mrs. Gosda." and "Note again that I do not think Mrs. Gosda did anything wrong."
Does this ethics committee exist for people to act out their squabbles with each other or get back at people?
This is very odd and seems like a royal misuse of a lot of people's time.

It's always very interesting reading commentary on the Cornwall on Hudson website. Agree or disagree, it's democracy at work!
To the owners of the site, thank you for this service.
I would like to make a suggestion. Having experience as a web developer, and content writer, and, simply, as a user, I think having an auto preview would really benefit this site.
That way, a writer would write up comments, and in the auto-preview mode he would be able to see how the comments would look before he would publish it.
As it stands now, you simply write a comment and hit the "add comment" button and, voila: it's published. Only after reading it in the "published" view do you see how the rest of the world sees it. "Oops," is the common thought, I'll bet.
With an "auto preview" feature, one could go back, clean up, and then hit "publish."
In addition, an auto editor which might check for spelling and grammar could be enabled.
These functionalities are usually simple snippets of code that can be embedded in the back end of a site's hard coding.
It would definitely enhance the user experience!
Just a thaght...er, thought.

Good point Ted I do not see anything in the ethics law specficly. Mabe in the state law.It is like falsafying a document but it is probably a civil matter.Perhaps a lawer should revew it with these facts in mind.
