Two local teens, both recent high school graduates, have been brought together because of their shared passion for singing.
Rachel Love and Laura Snider live just a few miles apart in Washingtonville and Cornwall but, because they attended different schools, did not meet each other until they were assigned as roommates in the American Music Abroad program this summer. Now they will be touring Europe together for three weeks, where they will perform seven concerts in some of the most beautiful cathedrals of the world.
The American Music Abroad program selects musicians who have excelled in their high school music programs and performed in New York State School Music Association activities such as All-State choruses, bands and orchestras. About 90 young musicians rehearse for a weekend at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania before heading to Europe, where they will also have an opportunity to explore tourist attractions in Italy, Austria, Germany and France.
Back home, Rachel studies private voice with Claudia Cummings and took part in the chorus under the direction of Jeffrey Wurster. She will attend the Hartt School of Music as a performance/music education major in the fall.
Laura studies voice with Ann Shatto and her high school choral director was Tony Ravinsky. She will be attending Bucknell University, where she plans to major in english/creative writing.
