General News: We All Scream for Ice Cream

Ice cream, anyone?
This Sunday, get out your sugar cones, scoops and spoons and start indulging – it’s National Ice Cream Day. In 1984 President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day, making this Sunday, July 18, a special holiday.
Americans love ice cream, eating more than the people of any other country. The average American eats 23 quarts of ice cream annually. When immigrants arrived on Ellis Island, they finished their first meal in America with ice cream.
An Ice Cream A Day
Cornwallite Tom DeSocio does his part by eating ice cream “every single day.” He takes after his father who was “a big ice cream hound.”
“I eat two half gallons in a bad week, three in a good week,” said DeSocio, assistant treasurer of the Cornwall Lions Club. “The flavor doesn’t matter much, as long as it’s ice cream.
A Year-Round Treat
Thursday evening, Jeff Mitchell and Susan Miller of Newburgh were eating some ice cream at Paddles & Scoops while enjoying the music of the Bluesmatic at the village bandstand.
“Nothing better than ice cream in the summertime,” said Mitchell. “Or the winter,” added Miller.
When asked about the significance of National Ice Cream Day, Miller said the holiday should occur “twice a year, at least.”
Making Ice Cream Has Been Her Only Job
Nancy Weir, owner of Weir’s Ice Cream in Salisbury Mills, grew up around ice cream. Her grandfather George Weir, Sr. opened the ice cream stand in 1956. Making ice cream has been her only job.
“Nothing makes me happier than when I see the smile on someone’s face as I hand him some ice cream,” Weir said.
While Cornwall’s Maple Hill Dairy Bar and Crystal Palace are no longer around, in addition to Paddles & Scoops and Weir’s, a number of local eateries serve ice cream including the Dragon’s Den Deli, Rita’s (New Windsor), Storm King Eatery, 2 Alices, and Woody’s.
So on Sunday, remember the saying: “You scream, I scream, We all scream for ice cream,” and eat some ice cream. One scoop or two?

Speaking as one of the owners of Paddles & Scoops, and a life long resident of Cornwall, I encourage, welcome and appreciate all the local support we have received since opening. I also hope all remember why we are there, to serve the community and bring a little happiness and smiles to our town. Please leave us out of all the drama, that has NOTHING to do with us. Hope to see lots and lots of people on National Ice Cream day!

I disagree, I think Bill is helping a great deal, we take ourselves too seriously hereabouts - and what is wrong with hanging out on the sidewalk and eating icecream, regardless of who else is around, just stay out of the way of the wait staff - those poor guys have to work on national ice cream day. and don't forget to drop a scoop or two for the doggies, they like ice cream, too
