Long before the heat of the day set in on July 4th, excited pet owners lined up at Cornwall town hall park to register their animals to take part in the annual pet show run by Court Rita #264 of the Catholic Daughters of America.
Costumed Pets on Parade
Each year, people from all over the area rise early and dress their pets – most of them dogs – in costumes, then put their own patriotic-themed outfits to take part in the show.
The competition is divided into five categories – large, medium and small dogs, cats and kittens and “all others.” Within the categories, awards are given by a panel of judges to those found to have the best costume, the shortest tail, the cutest name or the fluffiest coat, among other winning attributes. Nancy Torres served as this year’s master of ceremonies.
Show Judges Had a Tough Time
Most often children lead their pets around the show circle as the judges study them as they pass. The judges, town supervisor Kevin Quigley, village mayor Joe Gross, Father Paul of St. Thomas, Laurie Stein, veterinarian, and Mary Donahue of Donahue Farm have a tough job to pick out ‘the best’ in a crowded field of adorable animals.
Once the votes are tallied, the winners are called to the front and awarded a be-ribboned medal.
Four Cats and Exotic Pets
This year, only four cats took part in the cats and kittens categories so each participant was guaranteed a prize. The competition was tougher in the final category “all other,” which included two reclusive hermit crabs, a frog, a turtle (which won for its name, “Snappy”), two guinea pigs, two ferrets, a rat named “Angel,” a rabbit and parakeets.

What a sweet event this was! A great opportunity for Cornwall kids to show their love of their pets.
