Letters to the Editor: Question Handling of Valley View Nursing Home
June 30, 2010
To the Editor:
Only the Democratic County Legislators voted against the resolution to authorize the county executive to hire an independent consulting firm to study the county’s continued operation and ownership of Valley View Center for Nursing Care and Rehabilitation.
Both county legislators Kevin Hines (District 12) and Katie Bonelli (District 5), who represent the Town of Blooming Grove and Village of South Blooming Grove, voted for this resolution.
The legislature is responsible for oversight on the Valley View budget, but a number of legislators stated that the county did not provide them with the information needed to fulfill that responsibility. One legislator read the contract of the current managers of that facility, and it stated that they are already required to provide the information that this resolution was requesting. So why are we spending an additional $75,000? Are we going to deduct that from the $600,000+ we pay the current vendor management of Valley View?
After listening to the Legislators’ dialogue, how could anyone get the feeling that they care about the hundreds of county workers or the taxpayers? The Valley View budget has been blotted by this county government over the past eight years in preparation for the county executive’s objective of shedding this facility.
What legislator Depew called “courage” was his vote for the resolution despite the presence of the county workers and concerned citizens. If he had challenged that, then that would have been courage!
