Letters to the Editor: Affordable Housing Will Have Many Impacts
June 21, 2010
To the Editor:
The Orange County planning department has not estimated the population impacts of the proposed affordable housing amendment.
The 38,518 units of affordable housing proposed by the County, combined with the normal population growth, will result in a population explosion of over 174,493 people versus the 43,855 reported in the water master plan.
There are more than 131,000 people that have not been identified in the current county population projections. Affordable housing has 110,638 unplanned residents and the water master plan fails to count 20,000 Kiryas Joel residents who are supported by the U.S. Census growth rate from 2000 to 2008. Then there is the failure to show any impact on growth from the availability of unlimited water and wastewater capacity that the county is giving developers.
The failure to link the affordable housing amendment to the water master plan is a critical omission and brings into question the validity of the county’s recommendations. The impact on water demand, water supply, wastewater capacity, county infrastructure and the school systems needed to support this explosion in population has been ignored and needs to be addressed. Together these two amendments will be a financial and environmental disaster for the residents and taxpayers of this county.
