General News: St. Thomas School to Stay Open
June 10, 2010
St. Thomas of Canterbury Parish School principal Dennis Costello was busy Wednesday correcting exams for the eighth-grade graduating class and barely had time to talk about the news that the school would re-open in September with a new group of promising students.
St. Thomas, which has offered classes since 1917, had been warned last month that if it didn’t boost enrollment for the fall, it faced closure by the Catholic archdiocese. Last week, parish priest Reverend Bernard Heter wrote a letter to parents in which he announced that 88 students had enrolled for the fall, enough to keep the school operating.
Father Heter cautioned that the school still faces challenges but wrote he is confident of its success.
Principal Costello said that parents of prospective students are welcome to come by the school any day this summer between 9 am and 2 pm and he will give a tour of the facilities.
