General News: Townsend to Enter GOP Primary for Senate
|
Jay Townsend. |
June 02, 2010
Jay Townsend, a seasoned political campaigner who calls Cornwall-on-Hudson home, was not picked as the official designee of the New York Republican party to challenge U.S. Senator Charles Schumer in November but he won a spot on the primary ballot when voters will decide who fills the spot on the Republican ticket.
Townsend, who launched his campaign with a rousing speech at Cornwall Landing last month, got 38 percent of the votes cast at the New York Republican Party state convention on Tuesday. Gary Bernsten, who served 23 years in the Central Intelligence Agency's Clandestine Service and who led the hunt for Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan after 9-11, was chosen as the official designee of the Republican Party for Senate, garnering 62 percent of the votes.
Last week, Townsend was chosen as the candidate of the New York Conservative Party, defeating three other candidates on the first ballot to win the party’s endorsement with more than 60% of the weighted vote
Comments:
Wow! if Bernsten is so great, leading the hunt for Osama, then I have a question: why didn't he catch him? Is this the kind of performance we can expect from him as a Senator?" How long has Osama been terrorizing our country? The world? The CIA still hasn't gotten Osama! Being in the CIA doesn't qualify Bersten for public office, in fact it might be a reaon NOT to vote for him!!! Rhaine Pharma

Well said Raine. It's so disappointing to such read a lopsided news commentary. The opening sentence stating Jay Townsend failed to win the Republican party nomination is both misleading and pejorative. Mr. Townsend won 38% of the vote, far and above the 25% minimum required for a primary. Furthermore, listing Mr. Bernsten as the 'official designee' of the Republican Party is inaccurate, since both candidates must first face off in the primary before either candidate can claim any official designation. As for the reference to Mr. Bernsten leading the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, this article makes it sound like he single-handedly went looking for Bin Laden who, by the way, is still out there!!!
