General News: Building Inspector to Resume Inspections
May 12, 2010
Several residents are waiting for inspections on construction projects in the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson and the mayor says that the embattled building inspector Bruce Yancewicz should start performing the inspections this week, despite the fact that last month the village board ordered him to work only five minutes a week.
Mayor Gross told the board that he has the backing of the department of the state to send Yancewicz back to work on his part-time schedule, 20 hours a week. He said he will work with the building inspector to address the issue of outstanding inspections.
Trustee Mark Edsall reminded the mayor that the board had proposed sharing inspection services with the town as a way of avoiding a backlog of inspection requests but mayor Gross refused to consider that alternative. “I am looking out for the interests of the village,” Gross said, “and I don’t think it is in the interest of the village to have the town do inspections.”
A majority of three trustees on the board have expressed their dissatisfaction with Yancewicz’s job performance and voted against his re-appointment as building inspector last month. The same majority voted to remove the village’s attorney in April and on Monday the board went into closed-door executive session to discuss the five or six proposals it has received from firms seeking to represent the municipality
Comments:
We have a board consisting of 5 votes. This is not a dictatorship. As I was told by a past trustee this is done as a means of checks and balances. Where is the balance when the majority of the board is overruled by the mayor. What happened to this system of checks and balances? Have we become the village run by dictate? Something is seriously wrong with our village government when one man believes he is all powerful and can dictate to the elected trustees.
