A Grammy-nominated composer of choral and symphonic music came to Cornwall high school on Thursday, where he worked with high school singers from throughout the Hudson Valley in workshops before they presented a live performance of his work in the evening .
Eric Whitacre is an accomplished composer and conductor who had no formal training until he turned 18 and joined the college choir, an experience that changed his life. He completed his first concert work at the age of 21 and went on the Juilliard School, earning his Master of Music degree.
Whitacre’s composition has become some of the most popular choral work of the last decade, featured on dozens of recordings. He has traveled around the world to conduct concerts and often works with colleges and universities to present seminars with young musicians.
On Thursday afternoon, Whitacre worked with ten ensembles from Wallkill, Minisink, James I. O’Neill, Cornwall, and Warwick to prepare his original compostiions for th public concert. The regional production was the result of efforts by musical directors throughout the area, including members of the CCHS music faculty under the leadership of choral director Tony Ravinsky.
