Momentum is gathering in towns and villages in Orange County to have some input in the county’s proposed water master plan, parts of which are now being discussed in the county legislature.
In Cornwall-on-Hudson, mayor Joseph Gross is asking board members to weigh in on the subject of how to protect the village’s water supply from encroachment by neighboring municipalities, a prospect that some fear could be allowed under the proposed master plan. The village is also moving forward with a study of its water supply in Mountainville and intends to asks the state DEC to increase the amount of water it can draw from the wellfield there.
At Monday’s board meeting, village resident Jonathan Chase warned the trustees of what he called a power grab by the county and he encouraged the public and elected officials to attend public meetings on the subject. On Thursday, the 22nd, there will be a rules committee meeting in Goshen where the sewer district and the county comprehensive plan will be discussed, he said. Other committees in the county legislature are expected to take up the issue in the near future.
In addition, Citizens for the Preservation of Woodbury will host a forum on the water master plan, the sewer and the pipeline proposed by Kiryas Joel on Wednesday, the 21st, from 7:00-9:00pm at the Central Valley Elementary School.
Comments:
For those who can attend tomorrow (Thurs, 4/22), the Rules Committee agenda can be found here: http://www.co.orange.ny.us/documentView.asp?docID=6888 Note especially items III, IV(b) and V(b) related to water/wastewater issues.
Although this is not a public comment opportunity, it's important to be there to convey the message that the public is paying attention.
And best to arrive early.
