Sixty years of Cornwall Little League history was on display this Saturday at opening day ceremonies held at the ball field. League president John Carnright recalled how the little league program has grown over the years.
Some 800 children from age five to sixteen joined the Cornwall Little League this year and Carnright compared it to the first year of play, when four teams of 8- to 12-year-olds took to the field behind the Cornwall-on-Hudson elementary school, which at the time was the village high school.
Three Generations of Players
Saturday’s parade was led by three generations of Cornwall Little League players: Lloyd Neville, who was eight when he joined up in 1951, his son, Lance, and his grandchildren, Courtney and Cole. A third grandchild, Carly, opted to march in the parade with her t-ball team.
Neville was joined for the season’s first pitch by George Kent, who was 11 when he played with Neville on the Dodgers team. Kent recalled how he played with Little League through high school and at Delhi college, where he was named an All-American player.
Elected Leaders Speak of the Meaning of Baseball
State, county and local officials were on hand for the ceremony, along with all of the volunteers who serve on the league’s board. After the presentation of colors by members of the Highland Engine Company, a group of singers from the Cornwall middle school sang the national anthem. Chaplain Herschberger, as he does every year, blessed the players and state senator Bill Larkin presented a commendation to the league. “This is why people fight overseas,” Larkin told the players, “so we can enjoy a day like today to saw we are proud to be an American and proud in be in the Cornwall Little League.”
State assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun also spoke and Kevin Hines, who is the newly elected Orange County legislator representing Cornwall, recalled how he first came to the fields as an eight year old, 34 years ago.
2009 Champions Are Honored
Three girls softball teams – the seniors, the majors and the minors -- were honored for winning the Section 9 titles last year, along with the major league boys baseball team, which had taken its league title three years running in a “3-peat” victory.
After the ceremonial pitches, Carnright led the eager young players in reciting the Little League Pledge and finally the speeches were over and it was time for them to play ball.
