To the Editor:
First and last, let me convey my disappointment that once again Mayor Joe Gross has proven himself unable to distinguish between his individual relationships, including those with residents and officials who view him negatively, and what might be best for the greater community he was elected to oversee.
In his public comments offering the three major reasons he does not want to re-appoint me to the Village Planning Board, retaliation heads the list.
He says I’ve verbally attacked him. True enough. And for what? For the building permit on a renovation of his house that’s been open for more than five years, and which gives him the benefit of lower taxes than those crushing so many of the rest of us. Also, for renting an apartment in his building, though it lacks a C.O.
Then, the Mayor shifts into base falsehoods. His number two issue for seeking my discharge is, ‘…he’s pushed for high density development.’ Actually, (and Joe knows it) I was just one of five members of the planning board to support what we all considered an innovative plan for one section of the (downtown) CBS district, which might be a model for adult residents who could then walk to shops and restaurants in the central village area.
His third reason for me to disappear is even more shameless. He claims I was responsible for the Master Plan controversy involving the fire siren. The Mayor well knows that while I chaired the Master Plan Committee, I was joined by nine other village residents (none of them shrinking violets) in preparing the document that Joe has ignored for over three years. I was simply one vote in 10, and every issue was decided democratically.
Will the village survive my departure, if it comes to that? Of course. Still, will it have been deserved? I don’t think so…and apparently, neither does the majority of trustees who voted in favor of my reappointment.
I thank them, and the several village residents who’ve spoken out against the Mayor’s action, for their support.
If I must leave because I refuse to bow to Gross intimidation, so be it. But who is the winner in all this? And who loses?
For a better Cornwall-on-Hudson,
Lee Murphy
