The tale of a beast transformed into a charming prince by the love of a young woman is at the heart of the musical being performed this weekend at Cornwall Central Middle School, Beauty and the Beast.
The classic tale will enchant many who come to see the young actors and actresses on stage but they will be also be touched by the tremendous musical abilities that the students unleash on the stage.
Under the direction of director/choreographer Marietta Moulton and musical director Valerie Ransbottom, who leads a pit orchestra while playing piano, the students have thrown themselves into their roles with remarkable skill. The main action takes place in a lovely castle, where servants have been transformed into furniture and household items, and in the hangout of the villain, whose name is Gaston.
At the castle, the Beast takes Maurice, the father of the heroine, Belle, captive but then Belle convinces him to take her in his place. At the castle, the Beast wants to enjoy a dinner with Belle, but she refuses, enraging the Beast. After she tries to escape and is attacked by wolves, the Beast saves her and Belle finds herself softening to his advances and agrees to dine with him and have a dance in the beautiful ballroom.
Back in her village, the villainous local hero, Gaston, has also been conspiring to win Belle’s affection and, when rebuffed, tries to steal her back with an angry lynch mob. The Beast is hurt in the attack and it is only then that Belle realizes she holds deep feelings for him.
The team of Moulton and Ransbottom have put on a great stage show with dozens of young performers in each number. At a dinner in the castle, you will see singing salt and pepper shakers, spoons, plates and napkins. Who wouldn’t love to eat while entertained with tap dancing forks and with decorations provided by women wearing flower pots on their heads?
The production of Beauty and the Beast will be performed at the Cornwall Central Middle School this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 pm Tickets are available at the door.
