A commercial pilot in Cornwall-on-Hudson has started flying into Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, and he is offering to take donated tents to people who are still homeless two months after the earthquake that destroyed their homes.
Dave Terwilliger writes that last Saturday he flew into Haiti for the first time since the quake and he could see the devastation from the air. “I was able to observe hundreds of bright blue clusters that are ‘tent cities’ made of the tarps we use to cover pools or use as drop cloths,” he wrote in an email. “Many of the homes and buildings that are still standing are unsafe to occupy so open spaces have become these makeshift campgrounds. “ Because people are sleeping outside without any kind of shelter, he says, they can get covered in mosquito bites, which create a health risk of its own.
Terwilliger suggests that anyone who has a tent in decent shape that is cluttering a basement or garage can bring it to him and he and other crew members who will bring them to Haiti. New tents will be accepted as well, he notes.
“ No big relief agency or government involvement here,” Terwilliger writes, “anything you give, I will hand deliver to the recipient.” If you would like to make a donation, you may contact Dave Terwilliger at [email protected] or by phone at (845) 534-5258.
