Barbara Gosda congratulates Jim Kane on his victory. |
March 16, 2010
Voters in Cornwall-on-Hudson elected James Kane to fill one of two vacant seats on the village board of trustees Tuesday. Incumbent trustee Barbara Gosda was re-elected to a second term while another incumbent, Rick Gioia, lost his bid for re-election by a small margin.
Four hundred and ninety two people voted in the election, including those who voted by absentee ballots. When the votes were tallied, Kane had won 340 votes, Gosda had won 223 votes and Gioia came in third with 208.
Kane, who was making his second run for the office, far outpaced his opponents in the race. Trustees Gosda and Gioia, both allies of mayor Joseph Gross, were elected in 2008 when they defeated former trustees Rudy Hahn and Peter Miller. In that race, 506 people voted, just a dozen more than voted in this election.
After the village clerk, Jeanne Mahoney, read the election results, Kane accepted congratulations from Mayor Gross, former Mayor Ed Moulton, and many others who had come to the vote count. Kane made sure that everyone met his seven-year-old son, Michael, who had done a lot of campaigning with him.
Barbara Gosda accepted congratulations from Rick Gioia, who said he was pleased that so many people came out in this exercise of democracy, regardless of the outcome. Trustee Gosda said that if the people want her in office, she is happy to do the job – but noted that she will have to get another file cabinet because she already filled one with paperwork during her first term.
Comments:
Congratulations to Mr Kane. The people have spoken and I believe a much more responsible board member has been elected.
