General News: St. Thomas CYO Team in Valient Defeat
March 12, 2010
The St. Thomas CYO Girls Basketball team played a championship game for the Orange County Parochial School League title on Thursday night. The St. Thomas team lost to the team from St. Stephen’s in Warwick. What follows below is an account of the game by a parent of one of the team members, who goes by the name The Writer.
Thursday night’s game had a score of Us 27 -- Them 36, but this is just the beginning.
Our Beautiful, Athletic, Smart, Well-trained and Well-disciplined young ladies played a game tonight that would not in my opinion, rank up there with their best games. There were missed opportunities, passes, and shots. This was not even enough to keep our girls down as they battled all game long and played a better game than their opponents and should have came away with a victory but there was one issue they could not overcome.
The game is meant to be played by two teams of five players and this was the case for the first three quarters. Then came the last quarter and a decision was made that our girls were too close for their opponents’ comfort and could actually come away with the victory, so in comes the issue. The opponents had brought with them a sixth man that changed the game in their favor and there wasn't much to be done about it.
I am sure this will sound like sour grapes and I am just as sure it is not. The Warwick referee (comment withheld) decided not to make any negative calls on "his" team and in doing so just about handed "his" team the victory. I said just about because our Beautiful, Athletic, Smart, Well-trained and Well-disciplined young ladies were not done yet. Still battling, the final nail was being positioned: a series of phantom fouls and possession changes, all against St. Thomas, proved too much to overcome.
Our heroes have fallen and this saddens me, not by the fall but by the method. The Beautiful, Athletic, Smart, Well-trained, and Well-disciplined young ladies have taken this much better than I have and that is to their credit.
I have to say a big THANK YOU to Head Coach Dave Powers, his assistants, Dan Hogan and Mike Nielsen, and finally to our Beautiful, Athletic, Smart, Well-trained, and Well-disciplined young ladies:
Coleen Hogan Patty Darcy Jackie Hogan
Taryn Malone Megan Moshetti Kiley Powers
Carley Nielsen Kelsey Fossveit Allison Thorpe
