General News: Local Clean Up Costs Top $200,000

The snow from last week’s blizzard may be melting, but the cost of the storm for local municipalities is still piling up.
Cornwall supervisor Kevin Quigley says that they have reported $138,872 in costs so far to Orange County, including nearly $94,000 for highway crews, supplies, equipment rentals and generators. The sewer department spent another $15,000+ for overtime and for generators to keep all of its pumps operating. Building and grounds and police department costs added to the total, as did the emergency removal of a collapsed roof on Main Street.
In the village, DPW superintendent told the board of trustees on Monday that his department had spent $41,524 in overtime, materials, equipment rentals, generators and tree work as of March 8th. The water department also added in its costs for overtime and generators – a total of $27,900.
The municipalities tallied up the costs -- a combined total of more than $200,000 --- to submit to Orange County officials who have asked the governor to declare the county a disaster area, a move that would make it eligible for federal assistance. The only catch may be that neither the village nor the town has submitted an updated hazard mitigation plan, a step that is required before a municipality can receive federal relief.
On Monday, village trustee Mark Edsall, who is also the engineer for the town of Cornwall, said that FEMA may waive this requirement, especially since both municipalities have started work on their plans.
Supervisor Quigley said that he hopes that some federal money will come, but knows it may be a long shot. “I wouldn’t count on the federal state or county,” Quigley said. “If it does come it would be great, but you can’t count on it.”

Huzzah the DPW crews! I was amazed at how promptly they responded to the snow storm and they were at it continuously. The clearing of Main and Hudson was a monumental task.Not to mention all the side streets, holy crow! Nice work guys, Thank you
