Letters to the Editor: Restaurants Now Serve Gluten-Free Fare

February 25, 2010

Dear Editor:

Eight years ago my son was diagnosed with celiac disease – a disease caused by severe intolerance to wheat and other gluten. He is completely healthy as long as he maintains a strict gluten-free diet. Our local grocery stores have been progressively increasing their stock of gluten-free foods and my son has been able to enjoy pasta, pancakes, cookies and even pizza as long as they are made with rice, potato or corn flour instead of wheat. He’s a happy child and doesn’t often feel down from his “strange” diet.

The one exception has always been at restaurants. The menus and plates all around him are filled with forbidden foods and he is left to order such plain meals as a burger with no bun. I am so pleased to say that this experience has recently changed.

Two restaurants in Cornwall (there may be more) now have gluten-free entrees listed on their menus. Last Friday, my son was able to enjoy a delicious pasta dish made with gluten-free rigatoni at Painter’s restaurant in the village. And the other night, I picked up a gluten-free pizza for him at Prima’s Pizza on Main Street.

It may be hard for others to understand how this change can have such a profound effect on our quality of life, but I want these establishments to know that they are making our family very happy. Thank you for recognizing your patrons with special diets. We will reward you with our continued and sustained business!

Yes and a fourth Gluten-Free option Restaraunt is Hudson Street Cafe. In my opinion Donna makes the healthiest and BEST food in all of Cornwall: Organic and Gluten-Free fare-- can't get any better than that!

Yahoo, we are finally beginning to realize how important our diet is to our well-being. I am thankful for the organic, whole, and minimally processed foods that are becoming more available to us. Now if we can figure out how to make these same healthy foods available to those with limited incomes we might actually be able to reduce the incidence of disease and loosen the stranglehold insurance companies have on us. I feel for you Jacqui - I know my shopping trips take so long because I read every label to find out what I am really eating.

Coop look into grants to help you move into the Cornwall Commons. The old CVS would be dynamic.

Mr. Schneider. I'm sure the Co-op would be gratefule for any help you could provide in researching grant opportunities and completing grant applications. You can log on the the website at www.cornwallcoop.com and volunteer.
