General News: Irish Arts Series at the Library

From the Cornwall Public Library
Cornwall Public Library will be kicking off a special 3-part series in early March entitled “Irish Arts: as Seen, Heard and Spoken.” The project is the creation of the library’s program coordinator, Rosaleen Leahy, and has been made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts’ Decentralization Program administered by Arts in Orange and through the generosity of the Friends of Cornwall Library.
Part I – Irish Arts: as Seen – with Paul Gould
Friday, March 5 – 6:30 PM
Exhibit of Irish scenes and lecture by Paul Gould in the library’s Community Room. Attendance is limited to 40 residents of Orange County, with pre-registration required by 3/3/10.
Saturday, March 6 – 10 to 12 AM
Art workshop where Mr. Gould will demonstrate the art of beginning with a blank canvas, choosing colors, details and shading to compose a work of art. Participants may bring a small sketch pad or notebook but no easels or canvases will be allowed. Attendance is limited to 30 residents of Orange County, with pre-registration required by 3/3/10.
Part II – Irish Arts: as Heard – with Brian Conway and Brendan Dolan
Saturday, March 20 – 12 Noon
Irish fiddle and piano accompaniment workshop instructed by Brian Conway and Brendan Dolan in Munger Cottage. Attendance is limited to 10 fiddle students and 10 piano students each having had at least 2 years of music lessons on their instrument. Registration is directly with Rosaleen Leahy at the library, by phone or in person, no later than Thursday 3/18/10.
Saturday, March 20 – 3:00 PM
Concert of traditional Irish music featuring Brian Conway on fiddle and Brendan Dolan on piano, with student performers and dancer. Located in Munger Cottage, attendance is limited to 100 Orange County residents with pre-registration by 3/18/10.
Part III – Irish Arts: as Spoken
With Irish storyteller, Bairbre McCarthy in a workshop format where participants will learn techniques of telling an original story, or re-telling a traditional tale. Registration will be required and attendance is limited to 20 Orange County residents. Ms. McCarthy will later be featured in a storytelling performance accompanied by fiddler, Frank Orsini. Attendance will be limited to 100 Orange County residents. Dates for these two events will be announced in the near future. Both events will take place at Munger Cottage.
