General News: Public Speaks on Laurel Ave. Parking Ban
January 14, 2010
The proposed parking ban on Laurel Avenue is up in the air following Monday’s Cornwall town council meeting. Three residents of the street showed up at the meeting to speak on the subject – one opposed the measure and the other two favored it.
Michael Cooney, who lives at 59 Laurel Avenue, presented the council members with three dozen photos he had taken of streets in Cornwall that he said were just as narrow as Laurel Avenue and asked why his street had to be singled out for a parking ban. He noted that the fire department had recently responded to a fire at a neighbor’s house without a problem.
Cooney’s neighbor across the street, Christine Longueira, whose husband had originally proposed the parking ban, said she favored a restriction on parking from at least 6 am to 6 pm because the sidewalk is too rough to push a stroller on and sanitation trucks could have better access. John Howard, of 65 Laurel Avenue, noted that the street had become a major thoroughfare and said he has seen cars racing to the intersection of Route 9W to “make the light.” He suggested that people should be able to park their cars in their driveways rather than on the street, even if they have to juggle getting in and out of their drives.
After listening to the public comment, the council did not put the measure up to vote.
