General News: COH Police Join Search for Missing Boy
December 22, 2009
A state police helicopter repeatedly flew over Cornwall Landing late Tuesday afternoon, part of what Cornwall-on-Hudson police chief Paul Weber said was another day’s search for signs of a missing 4-year-old Newburgh boy.
Weber also said that police from Cornwall-on-Hudson have joined the search for Marc Bookal, who has been missing since December 14. Last week, village officers George Krause and Michael Lug joined the search led by city of Newburgh police along the edges of the Hudson River. Chief Weber said he took part in the search on Saturday.
Chief Weber, who in addition to his position as village police chief is a sergeant for the city of Newburgh police and the official spokesperson for the investigation into Bookal’s disappearance, said that as the Christmas holiday approaches police are following up more leads. “We are hoping every day,” Weber said, “but we are thinking the worse.”
Weber noted that ten days after the boy’s disappearance both of his biological parents had been found to be truthful in polygraph tests. The mother’s boyfriend, who is also the last person to see the toddler alive, is not cooperating with police, Weber, said, and has refused to take a polygraph test. The boyfriend, 30-year-old Cory Byrd, has been charged with reckless endangerment for allowing the child to wander off. A $16,000 reward has been posted for the safe return of the child.
Many Newburgh community members have helped in the search for Bookal. Weber noted that people in the neighborhood have put up flyers and posters with their own money. “The community is responding great,” Weber noted, “they are very cooperative and really did a good job. They really look after their kids.
As of Tuesday evening, there was no indication that state police had found any signs of the missing toddler in their search of the Hudson River.
