The Cornwall Central School District is planning a renovation of the auditorium and other parts of the Cornwall Central Middle School building and, to get approval for it, the district will hold a special referendum on January 12, 2010. School district officials explain that although the $735,000 project will not cost taxpayers an extra penny, it still must be voted on by eligible residents in the school district because it is a capital improvement project.
If you have ever attended a concert in the middle school auditorium, you have seen the broken chairs that no one can sit in or the torn carpet on the floor that creates a hazard for both students and visitors. Wires are taped to the floors or draped up the walls – the entire space looks woefully neglected. That’s why schools superintendent Timothy Rehm says its time to spend money that New York State has given the district to be used on an improvement project like this before more state budget woes take the resources away. The funding for the renovations will come from state Building Aid and EXCEL Aid.
In addition to repairing the seating and carpet in the auditorium, the district plans to replace faulty wall panels in the library, divide a large classroom into two spaces, replace broken lockers and other minor repairs throughout the 53-year-old building. Comments:
I see no problem with making the necessary repairs but $735,000 sounds like an awful lot of money. Watchdogs, be ready to jump on inappropriately high charges for the work being done!

I presume that you actually meant competitive bidding?
