Dear Friends,
As this year comes to an end and we look ahead to the next with anticipation for the 250th birthday of the Sands Ring Homestead, we would like to thank all of you, our donors, volunteers and visitors. It would not be possible for us to keep this history alive without you. It is because of the generosity of so many of you that we could complete so many needed repairs and improvements to the homestead this year.
Some of the highlights were the installation of a new heating system, renovation of the second floor into usable space, new brick walkway, and patching and painting of the first floor. In addition to physical enhancements the Homestead has also added a virtual presence into the world through the internet this year. Sands Ring launched its first official website in addition to a page on the social networking site, Facebook. The educational program is also flourishing after vast improvements to the programs last year with new staffing. In the school year from 2008 through 2009 the homestead had over 500 students attend its workshops and even more people experienced Sands Ring through our Open Houses.
Next year, for the 250th Birthday we will have many special events including a classic car show, an art auction, numerous open houses open to the community, and even a birthday party!
Despite our best effort and progress at the Sands Ring Homestead, a soon-to-be 250 year old building needs a lot of upkeep and care. In the coming year we hope to receive the funding to allow us to complete many much needed projects. We battle many hurdles in keeping this historic home preserved. The largest one we face right now is that the roof of the building is in grave shape and needs to be replaced as soon as possible. At this point we are praying that it holds up through this winter. The Homestead definitely cannot afford the cost of this urgent project without your help. Another project is to renovate the current bathroom so it is handicapped accessible. This is very important so that all people may enjoy a learning experience at Sands Ring.
Sands Ring Homestead is one of the oldest Dutch colonial houses still standing in the Hudson Valley. This year we ask, as you are making your year end donations to please consider making a donation to this cause and aid us in our endeavor to preserve this important piece of history.
Thank you for all your support during these tough times.
Sincerely,
The Board of Sands Ring Homestead
