A college student from Cornwall is headed to China just weeks after he graduates from SUNY Purchase later this month. Fabrizio Spademan, the son of Bettina Louise Strom and Charlie Spademan, was selected to take part in an honorary tour as a guest of the Chinese government based in part of his Chinese language skills.
The program Spademan will participate in, Discovering China, is part of an effort to repay the generosity of SUNY following a May 2008 earthquake that struck the area around Chengdu in Sichuan Province, China, causing enormous loss of life, injuries and damage. Immediately afterwards, SUNY welcomed 150 university undergraduate students from Sichuan Province to study with full scholarship for a year.
Spademan said the group of some 30 SUNY students, who were chosen from a large group of applicants, will be welcomed at a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing before touring Sichuan province. He says that after the tour ends he hopes to stay in China, teaching or using his Chinese language skills.
